Admission Info

Introduction

An effective admissions policy is essential in order to ensure that appropriate admissions are made.  It is designed to support KISC’s mission, vision, values and philosophy. 

 

Objectives

• To be able to implement the admissions policy in such a way that families feel loved, cared for, treated as individuals and where relationship is foundational to the process.

• To ensure good communication.

• To enable families to understand the criteria on which admissions are based.

• To give families the opportunity to express their own particular situation/needs/concerns.

• To make the admissions process clear.

• To help us to admit students who are likely to be comfortable in the KISC environment/culture and able to respond positively to the educational opportunities that we offer. 

Criteria

Any expatriate mission parents may seek admission for their own children of primary age.  However, we do not have the facilities to admit children with special educational needs. 

 

Any other expatriate parents or Nepalis may seek admission for their children.  Admission is conditional upon:

1. The availability of a place in the class (KISC always keeps one place per class for any unexpected expatriate mission admissions that may be required at short notice).  The maximum class size is 14 students for Grade R, 12 students for Grade 1 (Key Stage One), 22 students for Grade 2 (Key Stage One ), 22 students for Key Stage Two A (Grade 3 & 4) and 22 students for Key Stage Two B (Grade 5 & 6P).  Secondary class sizes are capped at 20.

2. The school report from the previous school suggests that the child is suitable in terms of their academics and behaviour.

3. The results of the child being assessed at KISC for sufficient proficiency in English and Mathematics.

4. The parents being willing for their child to fully participate in all of KISC’s educational programmes and being comfortable in the general KISC environment/culture.

 

At present, under our agreement with HMG, Nepalis may be admitted to KISC.  The following criteria needs to be met:

 

1)  They obtain a letter of exemption from HMG Nepal Ministry of Education.

2)  They have been educated in the English medium and they pass KISC tests in English, Mathematics and any other subject that may be required. 

Other criteria:

·     Admission is restricted to those students who have performed to a specified academic level by the end of Grade 8 or Grade 10.  If students have not studied at KISC in Grade 8 or Grade 10 proof of equivalent academic ability is required.  The details are available in the curriculum handbooks.

·    Students who have been educated in the Nepali or Indian system and are seeking admission for higher than Grade 8 may not apply as the difference in education, curriculum and style of learning means they are unable to succeed.

KISC Admissions Process 2008-9

1.  Initial inquiry from parents

2.  Dialogue between Principal’s PA and parents either by meeting or correspondence

3.  Discussion of admission criteria, fees, curriculum, ethos of school, personal issues including care arrangements and needs

4.  Decision made to pursue the application or not

 

If yes, then:

 

1.  KISC gives tests in English, Math and other subjects as required (cost for the test is 1000 rupees)

2.  Parents submit latest school report/s

3.  Parents submit a copy of child’s birth certificate/official adoption papers, passport details of child and parent(s) and valid visa for parent/s and child/ren

4.  If applying for mission rates:

copy of a letter of appointment from mission to Nepal or letter from organization’s in-country representative

5.  Applicants who are Nepali also need to submit the letter of exemption from the Ministry of Education 

6.  Principal meets with parents and decides whether to admit the child or not. Key parts of the Information Booklet are explained.

 

If yes, then:

1.  Admission packet is given to parents so the forms can be filled in and signed

(Contains admission forms (Option Forms for Grades 6-11), mission/vision/values statement, medical information & emergency contact form, evacuation form and information booklet)

2.  Admission packet is returned to KISC except for the information booklet.

3.  Confirmation of enrolment slip is given to parents

4.  Confirmation of enrolment slip is returned to KISC along with the Refundable  Deposit (Rs. 20,000/child) and the Capital Levy Fee (US$750 per child)

 

School Fees:

An invoice will be sent out each term.  There are 4 terms in a year.  Payment is due within one month of receipt of the invoice.

 

There is a 100Rps fee in Term 1, per child, each year for administration costs for the Parent Teachers Association.

·        KISC offers a 10% discount for each sibling

·        Refundable deposit for all students is NRs. 20,000.

·        Capital Levy is 750US$ per child.

·        Hostel rate to be determined when available (planning for August 2009)

 

Once a child’s place in KISC has been offered, a refundable deposit is payable to confirm the placement. The refundable deposit is retained by KISC throughout the student’s time of study, including furloughs. Refund of the deposit is dependent upon the parents giving one term’s notice, in writing, of their intention to withdraw the child, and all outstanding accounts being cleared. It MUST be paid in NRs. only and will be refunded as NRs.

 

Fees are payable four times a year. It is expected that fees are paid within the first two weeks of the term at the latest. Fees are paid by cheque or rupees cash only, not transfer. Default in paying of fees results in a 1000 Rs. administration fee per week over due and could result in a child’s enrolment being terminated.

 

Fees are calculated in United States dollars. They may be paid in this currency, in pounds sterling or in Nepalese rupees. The exchange rate is calculated at the date of billing according to The Kathmandu Post.

 

Full term fees are payable even if a student is present for only part of the term unless a prior arrangement has been made with the Principal.

 

External examination fees are payable at the time of examination enrolment in Term 3 of Grade 10, 11 and 12. Parents are responsible for the additional costs involved in the purchase of course materials and/or correspondence courses, external examinations and the associated postage.

 

In order to help with the capital development of KISC, all families pay a Capital Development levy at the time of the admission of their first child. The current capital levy is $750 per child.
